Feeling Better: The Wisdom of the Doc
by Rev. Dr. Daryl C. Greene
The "Doc" referred to in the title of this book is Rev. Dr. Daryl Greene. Born with a rare progressive neurological disease, he contends with his visual limitations, walking difficulties and chronic pain every day. Yet he refuses to be defined by his circumstances. He takes no medications. He continues to serve God and to make the most out of each day. This book contains the inspiring story of how he has learned to overcome his limitations and his pain. It also contains his prescriptions for coping with health challenges, based on his life experience and academic research. His book contains research and information about the body-mind-spirit connection- some things your doctor may not have told you. And it contains Biblical theology and practical suggestions about how to put your faith to work in the quest for healing-some things your pastor may not have told you.
The book revolves around what Dr. Greene calls his four practical prescriptions for coping with and overcoming chronic pain and progressive disabilities. He calls them the four "M's" to feeling better: Mission, Muscles, Massage, and Meditation. In other words,
- Find a personal mission
- Adopt an exercise program to stretch and strengthen the muscles
- Get regular massage therapy treatments,
- Learn the art of healing meditation.
With this in mind, the material contained in this book is divided into four parts:
- A biographical introduction to the "Doc", to his life story, and to how he learned to follow these prescriptions for feeling better.
- A historical chapter which retraces the history of Christian thought and Western medical tradition. It explains why we often have conflicting beliefs about why we get sick and how we can find healing. It explains the nature of the body-mind-spirit connection from Biblical and modern medical perspectives. And, it lays the foundation for understanding why the author's prescriptions can help people to overcome chronic pain and progressive disabilities.
- What the author calls the spiritual prerequisites for putting faith to work. It provides the spiritual guidance to find the necessary courage to rise above health challenges and to follow his practical prescriptions for feeling better.
- The rest of the book is devoted to the presentation of the four prescriptions, including medical research which explains why following these prescriptions can help people to cope with and overcome chronic pain and progressive disabilities.
Dr. Greene states, "What you will read in this book is biblically grounded, theologically sound, scientifically rational, and very practical''.
